Katie Buelow, Gary Glowinski, Paul Wojtena Elected to CSJA Hall of Fame

Central States Judges Association is 50 years old as an association. A most fitting way to celebrate its anniversary is to announce three newly elected individuals to the CSJA Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Committee, the officers, board, and captions heads are proud to announce the members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2008. Those honored will be Katie Buelow, Gary Glowinski, and Paul Wojtena. Induction to this select group will occur on August 16 at the CSJA Annual Fall Seminar in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Buelow is currently serving CSJA as Visual Caption Head and has been a member of the association for the past 30 years. Katie has judged for WGI for 25 years and has served as Equipment Caption Head and Task Force Judge for 5 years. She has performed with and instructed many award winning color guards, marching bands, and drum corps.

Glowinski passed away this past September but was an integral part of CSJA’s early growth serving as business manager, secretary and a past member of its Board of Director. Gary also instructed the Royal Airs, Hawthorn Cabelleros and other groups.

Wojtena has served as Co-Percussion Head for CSJA. He became a member of CSJA in 1967 and was a long time judge for DCI for almost twenty five years. Paul has instructed many groups along the way and still enjoys writing and teaching. He is also active with DCA and Indiana Percussion Association.

Nominations for Hall of Fame were received and considered by the Hall of Fame Committee, chaired by Gene Monterastelli. Areas under consideration included information of the individuals judging career, their impact on Central States Judges Association and upon the marching/music activity as a whole in the pageantry of the arts. CSJA Member Bob Rada Selected As Arranger for the Cavaliers 60th Anniversary Alumni Corps

CSJA music caption member Bob Rada has been as one of the arrangers for the Cavaliers 60th Anniversary Alumni Corps. For those unaware, the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps are celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2008. The decision was made to field a reunion corps this year, as it may be the greatest opportunity to have alumni from all 60 years on the field at one time. To this end, several original members from 1948 will be on the field.  The corps will perform on Friday night at the DCI Semi-finals on August 8,  at the Indiana State Fair Band Day on August 6, and at a couple of additional DCI contests during that week. Out of 60 years of arrangers and brass staff, Bob Rada was selected to arrange 3 of the five tunes that will be performed on the field and was also selected to be a member of the brass staff. This is indeed an honor for Bob, considering the number of gentlemen who have been involved with the Cavaliers over the 60 years. Congratulations to Bob on your selection, and we look forward to hearing your music in August in Indianapolis. [Added 01/25/2008]

CSJA Member Doug Fletcher Named Outstanding High School Music Educator by IMEA

CSJA Board Member Doug Fletcher has been named the winner of the prestigious Outstanding High School Music Educator Award from the Indiana Music Educators Association. This is twice in recent years that someone affiliated with our organization has been selected for such an award. Karen Monesmith, wife of Executive Director Dave Monesmith, won the award for the Elementary School Level in 2006. From the Anderson Herald Bulletin:

The Indiana Music Educators Association has named Highland High School band director Doug Fletcher its Outstanding Indiana Music Educator of the year among high school instructors. Fletcher said it’s an honor to be recognized by his peers, and that he shares the award with everyone involved in the school’s band program. “I’m just fortunate that I have students who are willing to work hard and do the things I ask,” he said. “We can all share in this award. You can’t do this activity alone; it’s too big.” He will receive the award Friday during the Indiana Music Educators Association’s annual convention in Indianapolis. Fletcher leads a program with about 170 students participating in marching band, two concert bands, three jazz bands, a color guard and the uniquely Highland bagpipes class. “It wouldn’t be Highland Band without the pipes,” said Fletcher, who had no experience with the instrument before coming to the school.
